About Archie Roach
Archie sang to audiences so silent you could hear every nuance, every breath, every tremor. Every concert felt like a spiritual experience. From the moment he opened his mouth, the sound could well tears in your eyes and the power could nail you to the wall. He tackled the ugly truths but at the same time his songs were a love letter to this country. Everyone who heard his music was inevitably touched by it. But not everybody was fortunate enough to witness Archie’s brilliance close up. How lucky we were.
Our job was to visually communicate Archie’s brilliance. Simple. Every album, poster, piece of marketing collateral was to evoke a small piece of the emotion that the music held. It was the job of a lifetime. Somehow we found ourselves at the table working alongside Archie and his lifelong manager and all-round powerhouse Jill Shelton on projects so massive and so important for Australian music that we couldn’t quite believe it. We found ourselves working with Pierre Baroni, Mushroom Music, Aboriginal artist Tracey Roach and an extraordinary collection of people who understood that this wasn’t simply about designing an album cover — it was about building a visual language around a body of work that meant something.
The challenge was to create work that could stand alongside the music without ever competing with it. We stripped things back, let the photography breathe, used typography with purpose and treated every detail as an opportunity to amplify what was already there. The result was a body of work that felt unmistakably Archie: raw, considered, Australian and deeply human. Album covers became objects, posters became keepsakes, and the visual identity of the music became inseparable from the feeling of the songs themselves. We weren’t trying to make the work louder. We were trying to make people feel something before they’d even heard a note.
Secrets
Archie’s niece, Tracey Roach, sat down at my desk at 4pm on a Thursday. Jill, Archie’s manager, and I asked her to create an artwork that captured the feeling of the album Dancing with My Spirit. That was all the direction she needed. She already knew exactly where to take it. The next morning at 9am, Tracey arrived at my door with the artwork that would become the album cover and, before long, an iconic image in its own right.

Kind words
I have worked with Alexis and the team at Studio Dreams for many years. I LOVE what they create. The outcome consistently exceeds my brief and expectations. They have designed stunning artwork for albums, t-shirts, tea towel designs and websites for artists that I represent that always get tongues talking. My absolute go to design dream team!!
